This course helps you to understand the epidemiology of falls among the elderly, identify common risk factors, and teaches interventional and preventative strategies to reduce the incidence of falls both in the community and long-term care settings. This course is appropriate for therapists and healthcare providers of all levels.
Instructor: Joel Desotelle, MS OTR/L
Joel is an occupational therapist who specializes in neurological disorders in children and adults. He received his Bachelors of Science (B.S) degree in occupational therapy from Keuka College (Keuka Park, NY) in 1995 and his post-graduate Masters of Science (M.S.) degree from Misericordia University (Dallas, PA) in 2010. He holds a post-graduate certificate in pediatrics from Misericordia University (2006) and has worked in a variety of settings from out-patient pediatrics to in-patient adults. Joel is an experienced author and instructor who has presented on a wide range of topics including stroke rehab, neuromuscular disorders, autism, sensory dysfunction, dementia, falls, and outcomes-based therapy.

Course Objectives: Upon completing this course, you will be able to:
1. Define the epidemiology and economic burden of falls in the older adult.
2. Define physical, medical, and environmental falls risks for older adults in the community and long-term care settings.
3. Identify older adults who are at higher risk for falls in the community and/or long-term care settings.
4. Develop rehabilitative and preventative strategies that utilize a multi-factor approach to reduce the risk of falls in the older adult.
5. Develop a falls-prevention program in the community and/or long-term care setting using an interdisciplinary team approach.
6. Support current falls intervention strategies with evidence-based research.
