3 Contact Hours This course will demonstrate the effective use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on a shoulder subluxation following a stroke and support it’s clinical use in upper limb rehabilitation using an evidence-based approach. This course is appropriate for OT's and PT's who have some experience with using FES/NMES. Instructor: Kendra L. Desotelle, OTR/L, CHT
Kendra is an occupational therapist with over eleven years of experience working with hands and neurological disorders. She recently completed her Post-Graduate Certificate in Hand and Upper Quarter Rehabiliation and is enrolled in Drexel University's MHS program with a concentration in hand therapy. Kendra's research focus is on the shoulder and has presented on a number of other topics including serial casting, cumulative trauma disorders, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Instructor: Joel Desotelle, MS OTR/L
Joel is an occupational therapist who specializes in neurological disorders in children and adults. He received his Bachelors of Science (B.S) degree in occupational therapy from Keuka College (Keuka Park, NY) in 1995 and his post-graduate Masters of Science (M.S.) degree from Misericordia University (Dallas, PA) in 2010. He holds a post-graduate certificate in pediatrics from Misericordia University (2006) and has worked in a variety of settings from out-patient pediatrics to in-patient adults. Joel is an experienced author and instructor who has presented on a wide range of topics including stroke rehab, neuromuscular disorders, autism, sensory dysfunction, dementia, falls, and outcomes-based therapy..

- Identify the incidence of shoulder subluxations in stroke victims.
- Provide evidence-based support for using FES to treat shoulder subluxations.
- Articulate the functional anatomy involved in maintaining normal glenohumeral alignment.
- Articulate at least 4 causes of shoulder subluxation.
- Administer an FES program to treat shoulder subluxation including proper electrode placement in order to achieve optimal glenohumeral alignment.
